When the family – a couple with 2 grown up children purchase this black and white colonial house, it was in a state of severe neglect. The couple wanted to give their children the space and privacy they needed and yet keeping them close by. In order to achieve this, the bungalow needed extensive restoration works and adds on to create an annex self contained 2 bedrooms apartment for the children.

The most challenging part of the project was to retain the colonial building without letting the modern apartments shadow its’ glory. To keep it that way, the apartments had to be on a single storey. Basements were created for each of the apartments to increase living space.
Inside each apartment house a living, dining and kitchenette on the ground level The bedrooms are located in the basement. The interior style is modern contemporary.

The owners decided to respect the original architectural design of the main building. Much of the original floor tiles in the foyer and dining room were retained while the rest of the areas were replaced with marble. The wooden staircase and the wooden beams on the ceiling of the house were restored to its former glory. The living room in the main house is a mix of furnishings styles that are modern contemporary and peranakan. Art and antiques are from the owners’ private collection.

The entire project took two years to complete; the outcome is a heritage house that has been restored to its former glory and a sprawling modern multi-family home to enjoy for many generations to come.
